Many San Francisco and Bay Area homeowners don’t realize that the air inside their homes is far more polluted than outdoor air. This means increased respiratory problems, allergies, and asthma attacks – not to mention that contaminants can potentially be dangerous to your health! You clean your home and change the filter on your HVAC system regularly, but what else can you do to clean the air inside your home?
Here are a few tips from our San Francisco HVAC professionals:
Dust your home using micro-fiber or electrostatic cloths. Old rags used with dusting polish or cleaners simply spread the dust around. Use vacuum attachments to vacuum dust from areas such as baseboards and trim; otherwise, use static dusting cloths that attract and hold dust particles, such as those made by Swiffer.
Monitor humidity levels in your home. Air that is too humid promotes the growth of mold and mildew, both potentially harmful to your health. Try to maintain humidity levels of 50% or less for a balance that’s neither too dry or too humid.
Vacuum everywhere. Busy lives mean quick house cleaning; however, when you vacuum it’s important that you get under beds, closet floors, drapes, and moldings. Also vacuum furniture upholstery occasionally.
Steam clean carpets once or twice each year to remove embedded dust and dander your regular vacuum won’t pull up.
Clear the clutter. Sure, lots of knick-knacks may give your home a warm, comfortable feel and appearance – but they also collect a lot of dust. Same goes for teddy bears and other stuffed animals in your children’s rooms. Get rid of the clutter, it will be easier to dust – and to maintain a clean, dust-free home.
Consider an air purifier. Portable or whole-house air purifiers work to remove airborne pollutants, even those that are minute in size. Air purifiers actually filter the air inside your home, taking out the smallest particles of dust and contaminants that filters simply won’t remove.
These are a few of the most important things you can do to reduce dust and airborne contaminants in your home, helping your family enjoy healthier, fresher air and a cleaner home.
