Quality insulation has everything to do with how your heating and cooling system performs in your home. Insulation plays an important role in keeping conditioned air inside, and cold or hot outdoor air outside. It also impacts how comfortable your Bay Area home is, and how often your HVAC system kicks on and off. While most homeowners never have to replace insulation, there are situations in which it is necessary.
Why would you need to replace the insulation?
Water damage. It isn’t unusual for a roof to leak, and depending on where the leak is, it can impact the walls and ceiling. If water gets into the walls, not only does it result in the growth of mold and mildew, it can damage the insulation. Wet or damp insulation is a great environment for mold, which can negatively affect your family’s health and cause respiratory issues.
Low-quality insulation can settle. Think about a box of cereal or bag of chips and how when you open them up, the package appears to be only two-thirds full – the rest is empty space or air. This can happen with insulation that is of a low quality. When insulation settles, it leaves gaps. This means not only wasted energy, but higher energy bills and a less comfortable home. Depending on the situation, you may need to replace the insulation or add more in areas where gaps exist.
Insulation that’s decayed or thin. This is usually a problem in older homes built prior to the insulation guidelines set forth by the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Decades ago, insulation may have been manufactured of wool or cotton, rather than the fiberglass insulation frequently used today in building a home. This older type of insulation is prone to decay, and is often so thin it does little to insulate the home. Over time, it will rot. Total replacement using fiberglass or other high quality types of insulation is recommended in this situation.
Most homeowners give insulation little thought, as it’s something you don’t normally see. However, inadequate insulation makes a huge difference in comfort and how much you pay to heat or cool your home during the winter or summer season. High-quality insulation is a good investment that will pay for itself over the long-term.
