Expert Tips To Help Homeowners Keep Cooling Costs Low This Summer

cooling costs

When you live in San Jose, Hayward, San Mateo, or anywhere else around the Bay Area, you never know what summer will bring. Will it be comfortable, or will temperatures soar beyond what’s normal for this time of year? Recently we’ve seen temperatures in Northern California rise up well beyond 100 degrees – how can you keep costs down without sacrificing comfort? Our HVAC professionals have a few tips.

You already know running your A/C system continuously sends energy costs soaring, so what can you do?

First, make sure your ducts aren’t leaking air. The ductwork is what delivers cooled air to your home; if leaks exist in your ducts, your conditioned or “cooled” air is escaping. There are many things that can cause leaks including debris, rodents, neglecting to have your ducts maintained and cleaned, even how old your ductwork is. Consider having a professional inspect your ductwork to ensure it’s clean, properly sealed, and that no leaks exist.

Use the thermostat wisely. While it’s a great idea to have a “smart” thermostat installed so you can control the temperature while your family is away at work or on vacation, keeping the temperature in range even with a traditional thermostat is important. Most people can tolerate the inside temperature when the thermostat is set at 78 degrees, especially if you keep windows facing the sun covered and use ceiling or other types of fans to circulate cool air in the room you’re occupying. When you’re away from home, set the temperature a bit higher, say 82 degrees or so. After all, why cool your home when no one’s there to enjoy it?

Does your home lack sufficient insulation or have old windows? These two factors alone can result in substantial loss of cool air, which could be making its way out through the ceiling, windows, even the walls. Most homeowners don’t realize the huge impact a lack of insulation, or windows that aren’t energy-efficient, have on not only their comfort, but cooling costs. If you’re financially able, update the insulation and consider energy-efficient windows. You will be astonished at the difference it makes!
