A good percentage of residents in the San Francisco Bay Area suffer from some form of allergies. These allergies can result from objects or elements coming in contact with skin, particles being taken into their airways, and foods being eaten. It’s difficult to control what you breathe outside, but you can control how clean and allergy-free the air is inside your home by conducting some simple HVAC maintenance and following these practical tips for daily living as the allergy season fast approaches.
Use Your Air Conditioner
Keep your windows closed to limit the amount of pollen that can enter your home. Install an air conditioning unit that uses HEPA filters, so that it can trap allergens from the air in your home. Make sure to clean or change the filter frequently during allergy season, and also clean the vents in each room.
Stay indoors whenever possible. Try to avoid being outside between the hours of 10am and 4pm, as this is when pollen levels are at their highest. On a day when the pollen count is extremely high, close the windows and doors, and be careful that your air conditioning unit does not draw pollen inside your home.
When traveling in a car, use the air conditioning, and keep the windows closed. This will help seal the allergens out of your car if you need to travel during allergy season. Make sure you set your air conditioner on its recirculate setting, so that you are not bringing in outside air. This setting cleans and cools the air without drawing in pollen or spores from outside. Whenever you take your car in for an oil change, ask the mechanic to replace your air filter as well. Aim the vents so they do not blow into your face.
Purchasing a free-standing HEPA filter system can drastically reduce the amount of pet dander and other allergens in your home. For best results, perform regular HVAC maintenance by cleaning the filter regularly and position the unit in a central location within your home. This will effectively remove irritating substances more than the average air-conditioning unit. It may also save on your cooling costs.
As pointed out above, allergies result from many different things, such as what we touch, breathe, or even eat. Anyone who has ever suffered from an allergy knows how bad it can get. The information that you’ve read should shed some light on ways to combat any allergies that you are suffering from.
