How San Mateo Homeowners Can Save On Heating Costs

heating costs

Whether you live in San Francisco, San Mateo, or the East Bay, no doubt you’d love to save money on heating costs during winter months. Considering the coldest season of the year is fast approaching, we thought it would be the ideal time to offer you a few money-saving tips!

First of all, if you don’t have a programmable or “smart” thermostat, remember to dial the thermostat down about 10 degrees when your family is away from home, at work and school. Even during nighttime hours when you’re sleeping, turn it down to about 60 or 65 degrees – a very comfortable sleeping temperature for most people.

Let your windows warm up your home during the daytime. Windows that face south can help warm your home considerably during the day; at night, close the blinds, shades, or curtains to help keep warm air inside.

When you’re chilled, consider adding a layer of clothing. It’s easy to throw on an extra layer or some sweats to feel more comfortable, and far less costly than turning the heat up two or three degrees!

Use your ceiling fans to “push” warm air to the floor area. Everyone knows heat rises, and during winter months the warmest air will be up around the ceiling unless you help direct it down to where you are. Simply put your ceiling fans on reverse and set it on low. You stay more comfortable – and you don’t have to turn the thermostat up. In fact, you may be able to turn it down a degree or two and still feel just as warm.

Seal up those air leaks. Inspect your windows and doors to see if there are any cracks or gaps that could be letting cold air in, or warm air out. Even the tiniest crack or gap can make a tremendous difference! Consider door sweeps installed at the bottom of exterior doors, caulking around windows, and make sure all of your vents/registers are clear and not obstructed by furniture.

Adding insulation is one of the smartest things you can do. Insulation wears out and breaks down, and unfortunately, many homes are built with far less insulation than they really need for saving on heating/cooling. If you have an attic in your Bay Area home, sufficient insulation could shave up to 30% off your monthly utility bill! Now THAT’S saving!
