If you live in San Jose, Hayward, or anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area and are finally finishing your basement so you can enjoy the additional living space, don’t forget about the HVAC system! You want your basement to be comfortable, but you don’t want to sacrifice comfort in the other areas of your home. Here are some HVAC considerations to take into account.
Where will the ducts be located? This depends on several factors, including available overhead space. This will impact the placement and type of ductwork, and it may be necessary to re-route existing ducts or use slim ducts depending on your HVAC system. Drywalling around ducts is another possibility. You want a comfortable, energy-efficient home and the proper configuration helps in terms of how appealing your surroundings are.
Will the HVAC equipment you currently have be enough to provide comfort in your new finished basement and still be efficient? You’ll probably need to have an experienced HVAC technician evaluate the needs of your home when you’re adding livable space, particularly if the basement will be divided into more than one room. Where should the ductwork be located, and is insulation sufficient? Will adding the new space be too much of a load for your existing HVAC system? These are questions your contractor will be able to answer so that you’ll know how to proceed.
Replace the entire system, or add another unit to heat/cool the finished basement? Again, this depends on multiple factors, including the age of your existing system and its ability to handle the load. If your current HVAC system is 15 years old or older, it may make more sense to replace it with a larger system that will accommodate your entire home. If your heating and cooling equipment isn’t all that old, it may be better to add another unit for the basement. Again, a professional technician can help and provide alternate solutions.
