At Ortiz Heating & A/C, we know that a large part of controlling energy costs is making sure your HVAC system is running at its most efficient. This can be accomplished through regular air conditioner maintenance, along with a few things you can do yourself to make certain that air and energy don’t literally “leak” out of your home. There’s no reason to cool the air outdoors this summer, which is just what you may be doing if your home isn’t properly sealed!
Other than having regular air conditioning maintenance performed in your Hayward home, here are a few other tips to help you keep the cool air inside, and the warm air outside:
Seal up any holes, cracks or gaps. Anywhere there is an opening, your conditioned air can be lost – and hot summer air will find its way in. Use weather stripping around edges of doors; make sure that cracks around windows are caulked with silicone or latex caulk. Cracks around chimneys or even plumbing pipes can lead to loss of conditioned air. Anywhere there is a crack, hole or gap, seal it up!
Have Energy Star certified windows installed. Windows can be a huge source of energy loss, particularly if they are older models that aren’t insulated well, or at all. If you can afford it, have new windows installed which offer low E-coatings and insulated glass/frames. If not, consider some of the window treatments available today that block out heat. The sun shining in through older windows that are not energy efficient can make your HVAC system run longer in order to cool your home.
Consider a programmable thermostat. You want your home to be comfortable when you come in from work, but that doesn’t mean you have to cool it all day long while you’re away. A programmable thermostat lets you program your thermostat to turn on at a predetermined time, say an hour before you arrive home, so it’s comfortable when you get there.
One of the most important factors of all in enjoying comfort and money-savings is making sure your air conditioner is the proper size for your home. A unit that is either too small or too large will cost you in terms of energy dollars.
It’s that time of year when you need to make sure your heating/cooling system is in good shape for the summer season! Count on the professionals at Ortiz Heating & A/C for your Hayward and Bay Area air conditioner maintenance needs.
