Most Bay Area homeowners don’t give much thought to where their thermostat is placed in the home. Whether you live in San Mateo, Hayward, or other areas around San Francisco, there are lots of good choices when it comes to thermostats, including programmable models. However, the wrong placement could cost you not only comfort, but money as well.
Thermostat placement – some of the common issues we frequently see at Ortiz Heating & A/C
Exterior wall. This is not the best location for a thermostat, particularly if your insulation is lacking. An outside wall is closest to the temperature outdoors, so you may not get a true reading of the temperature inside your home.
Placement in an area that gets direct sunlight. You’ve probably already figured this out: If your thermostat is placed where sunlight hits it directly, it will detect that it is warmer in your home than it actually is. This could result in your system running too often, costing you money.
Placement in an area of your home far away from the “hub.” People, lighting, and the use of appliances all make a difference in the temperature inside your home. If the thermostat is placed in an area that is rarely used, it may not reflect the true temperature in your home – in those areas where you really “live.”
Near windows or doors. These areas tend to be drafty, which can affect the temperature your thermostat thinks it is inside your home. Place thermostats away from these openings for true readings.
Thermostats are extremely sensitive, so where you place it in your Bay Area home can make all of the difference in your comfort level, and energy efficiency.
