Even in San Mateo, Hayward, and throughout the East Bay, temperatures can get uncomfortably warm during summer months. Unfortunately, many home and business owners who use their cooling systems nearly every day and night forget their units need to be tuned up on a regular basis. At Ortiz Heating & A/C, we have a few tips to ensure your HVAC system runs smoothly, therefore reducing repair or possible replacement costs.

When operating your A/C, what’s the first thing you should do?

If your system is new, read the manual so that you fully understand all of the buttons/controls. It’s important to know how to set the temperature where you want it, so that you can avoid changing it manually when it begins to feel too cold or too warm in your home. If you’ve had your air conditioning system for a few years and you haven’t used it over the past year or even longer, clean it before using.

How do you clean your air conditioning unit?

Before you turn on the A/C, check the outside unit to make sure all leaves, twigs, dirt, and other debris are removed. Before cleaning the air conditioner, make sure it is unplugged and turned off to avoid possible injury. Inside, check the air filter to make sure it’s clean. Depending on whether you have the type of filter you can clean, or those that are disposable and need to be replaced, you may need to clean the filter. This can be done using a vacuum cleaner in most cases. Also clean the coils and fan blades, and make sure they’re completely dry before placing them back into your unit.

Are any components damaged?

Air conditioners have many components; for most people, knowing which aren’t functioning the way they should is difficult, unless you have HVAC experience You may hear strange sounds, or notice the temperature in your home isn’t as comfortable as it should be. When you aren’t certain what the problem is, it’s best to leave the diagnosis to the experts.
