Bay Area HVAC – Improve Indoor Air Quality With These 5 Tips

improve indoor air bay area

We’ve mentioned before that indoor air is considerably more polluted than outdoor air, but what can Bay Area homeowners do to change this? Having the cleanest possible indoor air can reduce respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies, helping your family stay healthier year-round. At Ortiz Heating & Air Conditioning, we want to help homeowners in the San Francisco area enjoy healthier, fresher air inside their homes.

Here are a few tips:

Dust and clean your home frequently. This may not be what you want to hear, but removing dust and dander regularly is important. Make sure to use the proper cleaning products such as microfiber cloths so that you actually pick up the dust, and don’t just stir it up.

Change the filter on your HVAC system. This cannot be repeated too often – changing your HVAC filter is crucial to cleaner air, as the filter captures dust, pet dander, and other airborne particles that contaminate the air inside your home.

Keep your home’s humidity in check. Excess moisture inside your home can result in the growth of mold and mildew, which can make your family sick. Look for damp spots or areas where leaks may exist, and remove any mold you find with a mixture of water/vinegar. Consider a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air if your Bay Area home has humidity issues.

Remove pollutants from the equation. Prohibit smoking indoors, and clean using green or environmentally friendly products when possible. If you need to paint a room or the entire interior, choose paint, stains, and solvents that are low- or no VOC (volatile organic compounds).

Consider a HEPA or electrostatic air cleaner. If the filter on your HVAC system still isn’t removing as much of the particulate matter as you would like, consider an air purifier or cleaner to remove more dust and debris from the rooms of your home. You might also want to think about the possibility of installing an ultraviolet filtration system in your ductwork. Your HVAC contractors can tell you more about this, and how it works.
