While you may not have switched the air conditioning on in your San Mateo, San Francisco, etc. home yet, it won’t be long. May is here, and time is marching on by. What happens when you turn on the A/C, and your system malfunctions? Perhaps it doesn’t come on at all, or it comes on but is not cooling.
Refrigerant leaks, clogged/dirty filters, condenser issues, sensor problems, dirty or broken coils – there are several reasons why an air conditioner may malfunction. Here are some of the most common:
Mechanical issues. Is your system running most of the time, or even all day? Not only is this tough on your HVAC equipment, it’s tough on your energy bill as well. A system that runs all day long and still doesn’t keep your home comfortable could indicate a bad fan motor in the outdoor unit, or a major issue with the compressor. Be sure to have your A/C system checked twice yearly so that any problems can be addressed early on, before they become more costly!
Refrigerant leak. Unfortunately, many Bay Area homeowners put off getting a refrigerant leak repaired, opting instead to have refrigerant put in every year by their HVAC contractor. Cooling systems normally do not leak. By getting the leak repaired, which usually requires repairing a line or replacing a coil, you could save money by the third or fourth year considering the cost of having refrigerant put in year after year.
Clogged air filters. While this is talked about time and time again by Bay Area HVAC professionals, so many homeowners still neglect changing their air filters every few months. This can lead to your system not cooling properly, and higher energy costs. If you have pets or plants inside your home, a smoker, or simply don’t clean and dust on a regular basis, your filter will need changing even more often.
Chances are you will be turning your air conditioner on in the coming weeks; there is no better time than right now to have your system checked out by a Bay Area HVAC professional!
