Bay Area Homeowners – HVAC Tips That Save You Money

Whether you’re a homeowner in San Mateo, Hayward, or any city located in the San Francisco Bay Area, chances are you would love to save money on cooling and heating costs. We’ve got a few HVAC tips we think you’ll appreciate knowing!

Do you often find yourself adjusting the thermostat up or down to heat/cool your home faster? The fact is, this isn’t effective – and it wastes a huge amount of energy, costing you more. What to do?

First of all, consider having a programmable thermostat installed. Typically, homeowners can save the cost of having this type of thermostat installed over a single cooling or heating season. You simply pre-set the thermostat for times you will be away from home for the day (or even for a week or two if you’re on vacation or out of town).

During summer months, set the thermostat a degree or two higher, and make use of ceiling fans to feel cool and comfortable. In winter months, lower the thermostat and add a layer of clothing to stay warm and toasty. Ceiling fans (or any type of fan) will not make the temperature cooler, but the circulation of the air makes the air in the room feel cooler to the skin. Additionally, by reversing the ceiling fan in winter months, the warm air that collects up around the ceiling will be pushed down, helping you feel warmer.

Try to keep your outdoor unit shaded. This simple step alone can result in 10% less energy usage. While you want to leave space between your unit and plants/shrubs, having a few perennials that provide shade for your unit will help lower energy costs, especially during summer months when the direct sun can be scorching.

Last but not least, your HVAC system (as well as other appliances in your home) should be those that are Energy Star rated, as these products are highly energy efficient and will help reduce utility bills. In fact, if your air conditioning & heating system is Energy Star rated along with your refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer, and other appliances, you could potentially save several hundred dollars or more annually on energy costs!
