Bay Area Heating – Most Common Central Heating Issues

Many Bay Area homeowners have central heating systems. While the winter season doesn’t typically get as cold as in some other regions of the country, it can get downright chilly! At Ortiz Heating & A/C, we want to help you keep your home warm and comfy this winter, while keeping heating costs in line. Below, we have listed some of the most common central heating issues.

Partial or complete heat loss. Does your furnace seem to be putting out heat, but not at the rate you’re used to? There may be a leak or blockage in your ductwork system. If you heat your home with a radiator, it could be that trapped air is the problem; in this case, bleeding the air may be required. Complete heat loss may occur when the pilot light is out, or the gas supply is inefficient. Be sure to check that the thermostat is turned to the “on” position and raised high enough so that the furnace will kick on before you check for other possible problems.

Issues with the pilot light. For your furnace to work properly, the pilot light must be lit continuously. A strong blue flame is essential for proper operation; if the flame is yellow and weak, it can be highly dangerous as carbon monoxide may be emitted from the system. Pilot light issues require the expertise of a skilled heating contractor.

Ductwork issues. While most of it is behind the scenes where you cannot see it, the ductwork delivers conditioned air to your home. When insects, rodents, dirt, dust, or debris create blockages or there are leaks in the ductwork, your system will not operate efficiently. The air coming in from registers will seem weak or not as strong as normal.

Broken thermostat. A malfunctioning thermostat will cause your home to have erratic temperatures, cold one moment and warm the next. A thermostat may “misread” the actual temperature in your home, which means it will not kick on and shut off at the desired temperature. Call in a professional at Ortiz to have your thermostat recalibrated, or replaced if necessary.

While there are some issues homeowners can handle on their own, many require the assistance of a trained and experienced Bay Area heating and cooling technician. At Ortiz Heating & Air Conditioning, you can rely on our experts for dependable service, quality products, and cost-effective solutions.
