It’s already the beginning of March, which means spring is just days away. Temperatures will be warming up, and making sure your air conditioner will be prepared to do its job is important. As Bay Area heating and cooling contractors, we cannot stress enough the importance of periodic maintenance. Your heating/cooling system should be checked twice each year, during spring and fall.
Here are a few tips for getting your HVAC system prepared for spring and summer in San Francisco and surrounding areas:
Check the unit’s drainage hole for blockages. If the drainage hole is blocked, your air conditioner won’t function properly. You can use a small wire to remove any dirt or other debris that may be blocking the drainage hole.
Replace your filters. Heat and air filters should be checked monthly to see if they need changing, however some filters last longer than others. Read the label on your filter, and make a note on the calendar so you know when it’s time to change.
Consider a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow you to program in the temperature you want your home to remain at, whether you’re away at work, on vacation, or sleeping at night. Some can be controlled remotely, and all help save energy.
Insulate. You know the importance of insulation in winter months for keeping your home warmer; insulation is just as important for keeping your living spaces cool and separated from warmer areas of your home in summer months. You will also want to make sure that, during a scheduled maintenance visit, your HVAC contractor evaluates the ductwork.
Schedule maintenance. While there are many things you can do yourself, a tune up is essential to ensure all components are functioning properly, and that any worn or damaged components are repaired or replaced. Your system will function more efficiently, making your living spaces more comfortable while reducing energy costs.
