Air Conditioning or Fans – Which is a Better Choice?

air conditioning

Although summer temperatures in the San Francisco Bay Area don’t typically soar into the upper 80s, 90s, or even 100s like many other areas in the U.S. do in summer months, many homeowners have air conditioning systems. The question is, would you be just as well off with only fans for cooling, or is a cooling system a better choice? At Ortiz Heating & Air Conditioning, we have our own opinions which may help you determine whether an HVAC system is right for you.

Fans are great for circulating the air, making the air in a particular room feel cooler to your skin. They’re fairly simple, consisting of metal or plastic blades, a motor, and buttons that allow you to control whether the fan is set on low, medium, or high. While fans make you feel more comfortable due to the increased air circulation, they do not actually lower the temperature in a room as air conditioning does. Truthfully, fans are much more cost-effective, however there are many drawbacks as well.

Air conditioning systems are becoming far more sophisticated, many designed to increase home comfort while lowering energy costs. While the cost of running an air conditioner will always be more than using ceiling, box, or pedestal fans, there are many advantages. For example, today’s cooling systems are capable of filtering allergens, dust, pet dander, and other contaminants in the air, in addition to lowering humidity levels in your home. There are many things high-efficiency HVAC systems can accomplish that fans simply cannot.

Additionally, most heating/cooling systems make it possible to not only cool your Bay Area home in summer months, but heat it in winter months as well, without relying on space heaters, wood, or other forms of heating, which can be dangerous. Space heaters create fire hazards, and wood stoves/fireplaces and other types of heating can create dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

So, which is preferable for San Francisco homeowners – fan or air conditioning? It all depends on how comfortable you are in your home, whether family members suffer from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory issues, and other factors. Most homeowners enjoy having reliable A/C for those infrequent days when temperatures soar above normal. The choice is up to you!
