Today, more and more people are going “green,” or in other words trying to reduce their negative impact on the environment. While summer months aren’t usually super hot in the Peninsula and surrounding Bay Area, there are times it gets downright uncomfortable. Air conditioning keeps you cool, however it can be costly – not to mention its environmental impact. How can you stay cool and comfy while reducing your carbon footprint?
First of all, choose the proper size and type of A/C for your home. An air conditioner that’s too big for your needs will result in more frequent cycling, which means increased energy use and costs. On the other hand, one that’s too small will run constantly in an effort to cool your home, also resulting in high energy costs and consumption. Proper sizing means everything in terms of comfort, keeping costs down, and using less energy.
Take control with a programmable thermostat. With older thermostats, homeowners have very little control; once you set the temperature and leave the house, there’s nothing you can do. A programmable thermostat, as the name implies, allows you to program it to your needs. Even when you aren’t home, many can be controlled remotely using a phone app. During warm summer months, you can program your thermostat so the house stays warmer while your family is out during the day (for instance, 82 or so degrees), then set it so it cools to your desired temperature by the time you arrive home. This way you don’t have to leave your thermostat at 76 or 78 degrees all day just to arrive at a comfortable home – this would cause your A/C to run more – AND you don’t have to come home to a stifling hot house, either. Perfect!
Having the proper type and sized air conditioner installed, and taking advantage of a programmable thermostat, makes for cooling that’s far more eco-friendly, while saving you a bundle on energy costs. It’s a win-win!
