Summer is the season when most Bay Area homeowners take a much-needed vacation. The kids are out of school and you’re ready to head out and relax, enjoy different scenery and surroundings, and put your worries behind for a while. With that thought, what should homeowners in the San Francisco area consider when leaving their home for a few days, a week, or even longer? We have a few tips.
Naturally you’ll want a neighbor or friend to pick up the newspapers and perhaps even your mail. Preparing for vacation involves thorough planning, but you shouldn’t have to worry about your air conditioning system while you’re away!
Should you turn the thermostat to the “off” setting, considering you won’t be home? Absolutely not! When humidity levels are high, it can be damaging to your home – super warm, moist air can result in the growth of mold or mildew. So, what should you do?
Rather than turning your AC system off, it’s better to raise the temperature on the thermostat four or five degrees. Your cooling system won’t run constantly, but it will kick on occasionally, which helps maintain proper humidity levels and keeps your home more comfortable so it’s not stifling hot when you arrive home. According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, for every degree your thermostat is dialed up while you’re away for 8 hours or longer, you can save one percent in energy costs.
Take advantage of smart thermostats. Many homes in San Mateo, Hayward, and surrounding areas are equipped with programmable, or “smart,” thermostats today – good news when you’re going on vacation. With these types of thermostats, you don’t have to worry about whether you should turn the air completely off, or turn the desired temperature up a few degrees – you can control the temperature remotely so that when you’re ready to head home, it will be nice and comfortable upon your arrival. You can also control the temperature while you’re away, depending on the weather forecast/conditions in the area where your home is located. Smart!
